Erling Haaland is set to spend some time on the sidelines after sustaining an ankle injury in Manchester City’s FA Cup quarter-final win over Bournemouth on Sunday, the club have confirmed.
The 24-year-old missed a penalty and squandered a series of presentable chances in the first-half of City’s hard-fought 2-1 victory – before substitute Nico O’Reilly set up the forward to level proceedings in the 49th minute.
Haaland landed awkwardly on his ankle close to the hour mark and was subsequently replaced by January signing Omar Marmoush, who netted the winner which was once again set up by O’Reilly, taking City to a record seventh consecutive FA Cup semi-final.
After the game, Haaland was spotted leaving the Vitality Stadium on crutches and Pep Guardiola said in his post-match press conference he was unsure about the extent of the injury picked up the Norway international.
City are fighting to finish in the Premier League top four and secure a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League, sitting in fifth place with nine league games left to play.
The reigning Premier League champions welcome 19th-placed Leicester City to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday evening and Guardiola is set to miss Haaland against the Foxes after Manchester City confirmed Haaland is set for some time on the treatment table.
A club statement released on Monday read: “Manchester City FC can confirm that Erling Haaland has suffered an injury to his left ankle. The Norwegian striker sustained the injury during Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final victory away at AFC Bournemouth.
“Erling (Haaland) underwent initial tests in Manchester on Monday morning and will now seek specialist consultation to confirm the full extent of the injury.
“Assessment remains ongoing to ascertain a full prognosis. The expectation is that Erling will be fit in time to play a further part in the remainder of this season, including this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup.”
It remains to be seen if Haaland can recover a time to play some part in City’s last few Premier League matches and FA Cup final, should the Blues see off Nottingham Forest in the semi-final at Wembley.
