Peterborough United have a 10% sell-on clause for Sammie Szmodics, as his official switch from Blackburn Rovers to Ipswich Town edges closer and closer.

It was revealed on Thursday evening that one of the newcomers to the Premier League, Ipswich, had agreed a deal with Blackburn for their star attacker.

A reported fee of £10 million is set to be paid to Rovers for Szmodics, who now looks set to make the step up to the top flight, following his previous campaign as the Championship's leading goalscorer.

There was a lot of back and forth between the clubs, with a £20 million price tag initially being placed on the Irish international, according to EADT.

A deadline of the end of July was supposedly set by Blackburn for any bids for the 28-year-old. Town were said to be unhappy with how long talks were dragging on for, and they weren't willing to pay an inflated price for their target.

Well, here we are in the middle of August and negotiations continued until they hit their crescendo. Szmodics has almost certainly played his final game for Rovers, he is set to become a top flight footballer and his old side Peterborough are set to benefit.

The Lancashire Telegraph reporter Elliott Jackson has claimed that Peterborough have a 10% sell-on clause for Szmodics.

Jackson didn't state, though, whether it was 10% of any fee paid for him or 10% of the profits made. Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony previously stated that Rovers paid £1.8 million plus add-ons for Szmodics when they bought him in August 2022, so Posh are in line for around £800,000 at least.

They will have been hoping to see Szmodics sold this summer but it was not always a guarantee. Once we got into August, and noise around a potential move to Portman Road started to quiet down, it seemed that the attacker might be staying put.

He featured in Blackburn's opening two games of the season, providing three goals and an assist in matches against Derby County and Stockport County.

When Ipswich entered the picture, it was stated that a new contract for the 28-year-old was a potential option. There were suggestions, in mid-June, that he was happy at Ewood Park, but later reports said that he was keen on playing in the Premier League and that Blackburn weren't going to stand in his way.

Szmodics deal is more evidence of smart business by Peterborough

Posh are exemplary when it comes to transfer negotiations and business. Every summer they seem to sell some star of the future who will continue to benefit them down the road. Szmodics is the latest example of that.

Now, you couldn't have necessarily predicted that he would hit the heights that he did last season based on his previous record, but Peterborough made sure to put themselves in a good position if it did happen.

Every lower-league side should be looking at the way they recruit and pick out gems which they then sell for millions and try to emulate them. That's easier said than done, admittedly, but it's a brilliant model to follow.
