Earlier this week Jack Gaughan reported for the Daily Mail that Phil Foden has suffered from an unknown physical ailment and mental fatigue this season. The effects of this have seen Foden fail to perform at the level we have been accustomed to seeing from the England international. The same could be said for the entire Manchester City squad. But in the case of Foden, it is only a matter of time before he returns to his best.
Form is temporary and class is permanent. That statement rings true in regards to Phil Foden as a player. At some point, whether it’s this season or next, City’s wonder boy will be back playing at the level expected of him. He’s too good a player not to bounce back from a tough 24/25 season. Perhaps the 24/25 season will be looked back upon as the moment when Foden kicked on as a player. That sounds like a profound statement to make but Foden is entering the prime years of his career. A season where the England international has had to battle adversity may spur him on to greater heights.
It would be massive for Manchester City if Phil Foden returned to his best during the closing stages of this season. Pep Guardiola’s side is in a battle to secure Champions League qualification for next season. They also have an FA Cup quarter-final against Bournemouth to contend with this weekend. If Foden can lift his game it would greatly aid City’s cause. At his best, he is one of Manchester City’s most dangerous attacking players. His team is screaming out for his skillset currently. Hopefully, Foden can lift to end this season.
But if Phil Foden doesn’t return to his best this season it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him get back to his devastating best next season. A break from the game, albeit a small one over the summer could be exactly what Foden needs. The toll of the game has caught up to him this season. Perhaps some time away from the game will allow the England international to rest and recharge his batteries. But whether or not it comes at the end of this season or next season Phil Foden will get back to his best. Form is temporary and class is permanent. City’s wonder boy embodies this statement, and when he returns to his best, a tough 24/25 season for him will be in the rearview.
