Ahead of the fixture, we take a look back through the years and pick out a starting XI from the players who have worn the shirts of both clubs.

GOALKEEPER:

Jack Butland

The former England shot-stopper has spent the majority of his career with Stoke City, he spent a total of seven years with the Potters and racked up 169 appearances between the sticks. In February 2014, Butland signed on loan for Leeds United from Stoke for the remainder of the 2013/14 season. He kept a clean sheet on his debut and featured a total of 16 times for the Whites before returning to Stoke.

DEFENDER:

Frazer Richardson

Richardson came through the ranks at Leeds United as a youngster and played in the UEFA Cup, Premier League, Championship and League One during his time with the club. He had his first taste of league football whilst on loan with Stoke City during the 2002/03 and 2003/04 seasons where he played 13 times and scored one goal with the Potters. Upon his return to Leeds, he went on to play in 173 games and score five goals for the Whites until his departure in 2009.

DEFENDER:

Len Armitage

A Leeds United player between 1920 and 1923, Armitage could play in both defence and attack. Over the course of three years with the club, played 53 games and scored 14 goals. Stoke City secured his signature in 1924 when the club signed him from Wigan Borough. Armitage remained with the Potters for the next seven years and played exactly 200 games, scoring 19 goals in process.

DEFENDER:

Dom Matteo

The former Scotland international was snapped up by Leeds United following his departure from Liverpool in 2000 and became an important figure in Leeds’ run to the Champions League semi-final that season. 146 appearances and four goals later, Matteo left the club in 2004 for Blackburn Rovers. In January 2007, he made the move to Stoke where he helped the club achieve promotion to the Premier League in his second season with the Potters. He played 25 games and scored once for the club.

DEFENDER:

Nigel Worthington

After making over 400 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, Worthington made the switch to Leeds United in the summer of 1994. He went on to spend two seasons with the Whites and he featured 55 times with one goal to his name. Worthington signed for Stoke City the following season and scored one goal in 15 appearances for the Potters in the second tier.

MIDFIELDER:

Amdy Faye

The Senegalese midfielder joined Leeds and Stoke towards the end of his footballing career. Faye had spells with AJ Auxerre, Portsmouth, Newcastle and Charlton before signing for Stoke City in 2008. His time at Stoke was blighted by injuries as he made 23 appearances in two seasons for the Potters. Following his release, Leeds secured his signature in September 2010 and once again his paying time was hampered by injuries. Eight appearances later, his time with the Whites came to an end following the conclusion of the 2010/11 season.

MIDFIELDER:

Lewis Baker

Current Stoke City midfielder Lewis Baker joined Leeds on loan from Chelsea ahead of the 2018/19 season. Baker played 14 times for the Whites in the first half of the campaign but was then recalled by his parent club in January 2019. Baker signed a permanent deal with Stoke City in January 2022 where, so far, he has made 93 appearances and scored 20 goals.

MIDFIELDER:

Michael Tonge

In September 2008, Tonge was snapped up by Stoke City but only played 12 times over the course of four seasons with the Potters and was sent out on loan on five occasions during his time with he club. Tonge signed for Leeds United on loan in September 2012 where he linked up with Neil Warnock who he previously played under at Sheffield United. When his loan expired in December, his move was made permanent and he remained with the Yorkshire side until 2015. Overall, he played 75 times and scored five goals.

FORWARD:

Jack Clarke

Clarke rose through the ranks at Leeds United and featured for the first team on 28 occasions, scoring two goals. Tottenham Hotspur secured his signature in 2019 and was subsequently sent out on loan to a number of EFL sides, Stoke City being one of them in January 2021. He played 14 times for the Potters before an injury cut his loan spell short and he returned to his parent club.

FORWARD:

Sam Vokes

The former Wales international made the move to Yorkshire in October 2009 when Leeds United signed the striker on loan from Wolves until the new year. He scored once in 10 games and returned to his parent club in January. Fast forward to 2019, Stoke City signed the former Burnley man and he remained with the Potters for the next three seasons. He netted on 12 occasions in 86 games in all competitions and later moved to League One side Wycombe Wanderers.

FORWARD:

Lee Chapman

Chapman began his senior footballing career with Stoke City and he netted 38 goals in 107 games for the Potters between 1978 and 1982. The striker made the move to Elland Road in 1990 and was a part of the 89/90 Leeds United squad who won promotion to the First Division. He netted 80 goals in 172 appearances over the course of three and a half seasons for the Whites before departing in 1993.
