After a pretty poor run of form for a team who have been leading the league for so much of this season, Portsmouth needed to have an active end to the January transfer window; and they certainly did.
Pompey signed five new players over the course of the last transfer window of the 2023/24 season. They were former Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Macey, Myles Peart-Harris on loan from Brentford, Wigan Athletic winger Callum Lang, Reading defender Tom McIntryre, and midfielder Owen Moxon from Carlisle United.
Portsmouth manager John Mousinho described the window as a positive one, and added: "I’m really pleased with the squad, and we’ve already seen the impact that some of the new players have had."
He was hoping to bring in another player on top of the five new additions but the transfer fell through. The player was initially unnamed but the identity of the mystery man has now been revealed.
It has been revealed by journalist Chris Wise that Pompey tried to sign 20-year-old attacking midfielder Jadan Raymond from Crystal Palace on the final day of the transfer window.
Wise added that the deal would have been a permanent signing for Portsmouth, but that the problems came from the Palace side of the equation.
Even though they weren't able to get their hands on him this time round, Wise said that there's still a chance that the club will try and get him again in the summer.
The Welsh midfielder has represented his country throughout his younger years, playing for Wales' under-19 and under-21 sides. Raymond did also play five games in England's youth setup, at the under-16 and under-17 level.
The 20-year-old hasn't managed to make any appearances in Palace's matchday squad, but he has been impressive in recent games for the club's under-21s side. In his last four games, he's scored twice and provided one assist.
He does have some EFL experience from playing in the Football League Trophy for said under-21s team against the likes of Wycombe Wanderers and Stevenage. These games were not his finest showings, but he was played in a much deeper role than where he usually lines up.
Pompey's great ability to bring in top-quality young players this season has been more than proven.
Man City loanee Alex Robertson was a brilliant player in the middle of the pitch for the club, but a hamstring injury means that he will miss the rest of the season. Abu Kamara has come in on loan from Norwich City and he has been a productive option.
They have a good track record of spotting, and being able to get the best out of, young talent, so their pursuit of Raymond should make Pompey fans excited about how good he could be.
Though it's disappointing that they weren't able to get a deal done, Wise's report does suggest that this saga isn't over and that the Eagles youngster could head to Fratton Park in the summer.
