England began their FIFA World Cup campaign in comprehensive fashion, as they picked up a convincing 6-2 win over Iran.

England did have an early penalty shout as Harry Maguire was brought down in the box but they did score minutes later, with Luke Shaw setting up Jude Bellingham’s header. Bukayo Saka doubled the lead in the 43rd minute, with Harry Kane assisting Raheem Sterling in stoppage time of the first half.

Saka doubled his tally in the 62nd minute and Marcus Rashford scored within a minute of him coming on, minutes after Mehdi Taremi had pulled one back for Iran. Jack Grealish, another substitute in the second half, scored England’s sixth in the 90th minute and it was only his second goal for England. In the 12th minute of stoppage time, Taremi stroked home a penalty after John Stones was penalised for a shirt pull inside the box.

The 6-2 margin is second in England’s heaviest winning margin in World Cup history, with their 6-1 win over Panama back in 2018 currently at the very top.
