The race for Europe is on, and while it’s an uphill battle, Borussia Dortmund did precisely what they needed to today: they beat SC Freiburg away from home. Not only is this the second time this season the Black-and-Yellows have won two consecutive league matches, but this time it’s also been against two clubs ahead of them in the table. These are three valuable points in the race for European competition.
BVB were lucky in the first half not to concede a penalty when Ramy Bensebaini’s missed clearance bounced off his arm, and the opening goal from Karim Adeyemi put BVB into a good position at halftime.
The second half saw Freiburg on the front foot, but Dortmund maintained a compact defense and capitalized on Freiburg’s mistakes much more efficiently. Carney Chukwuemeka doubled the lead through a deflected shot, and not long after, it was 3-0 from Julian Brandt’s unselfish pass to give Guirassy the tap-in. Jamie Gittens made it four, and BVB were cruising to a victory. Freiburg did pull one back at the death, but it was too little too late.
This victory should give Dortmund some confidence ahead of the upcoming fixtures of Barcelona-Bayern-Barcelona. Until then, here are the player ratings for Dortmund’s 4-1 win:
