The January window has closed but that’s not stopping the transfer rumours when it comes to Chelsea – mainly because the Blues did very little to fix any of their issues.
Not only that, but new cracks are opening even since the window shut. Our first choice goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was dropped for the game on deadline day, prompting plenty of chatter that we will soon be in the market for a new one.
One name that keeps coming up is Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher. When we mentioned this yesterday, we forgot a very important element – the praise the young Ireland stopper had got from the defenders playing ahead of him.
Club captain Virgil Van Dijk called him “absolutely outstanding” in one of the various periods where he stepped in for Alison. Amazingly, Kelleher’s long apprenticeship means he’s now racked up an incredible 115 appearances for the Reds, despite always being an understudy.
He’s ready to be a number one, and Chelsea need one of those desperately.

Chelsea’s goalkeeper situation is only the latest area where they’ve got a major issue. As results this season have started to slide, the tension has risen and the flaws in the squad that has been built are becoming clear.
But the sporting directors in charge can only blame themselves. The rest of us have seen all of this coming – from the lack of a consistent striker to the lack of experience and leadership in midfield, to the injury prone defenders constantly coming in and out.
What we would do for a Van Dijk-like player in the heart of defence, too! The fact that on top of all that, we don’t have a competent top tier goalkeeper, is just ridiculous.
