Wrexham have been tipped to see a number of players leave in January when the transfer window opens, with some fringe players struggling for opportunities this season.

After two consecutive promotions had seen them go from the National League to League One, many people expected Wrexham's incredible trajectory to slow down, but there's been no sign of that so far this season, and they're currently flying high in the League One table.

The January transfer window will be pivotal for the Red Dragons if they're going to be successful in their quest for promotion to the Championship, and there's no doubt that Phil Parkinson will be in contact with money men Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney to find out how much he can spend.

However, it's still important for Wrexham to offload fringe players in need of playing time, and it could be a busy month at The Racecourse.

Wrexham expected to see players leave in January

We asked our Wrexham fan pundit, Liam Grice, what he expects to see from his side in January when the transfer window opens, and he thinks a number of fringe players will leave, while they may look to recruit a midfielder.

Speaking to Football League World, Liam said: “I think one thing I’m going to predict, which is probably on the more obvious side of things, is a few players are going to leave.

“Our assistant manager Steve Parkin has spoken about it a bit in recent weeks that some players have been brought in and not had the chances to even prove themselves, so I can see maybe a few loan deals for a few of the squad players.

"I think we might target another midfielder. I know we’ve just signed Matty James who might get an extension to his deal, but I think we might target a younger midfielder on loan from higher up in the pyramid to sort of secure that area and avoid any potential injury headaches for Phil Parkinson.”

The January transfer window could make or break Wrexham's promotion push

Wrexham currently sit third in the League One table, just one point off automatic promotion, although they have played a game more than the sides around them, and it's early days but they're looking good for a play-off place at the minimum.

The urgency to win promotion probably isn't as great as it has been in recent seasons as they perhaps aren't expected to win three consecutive promotions, but after a good start to the League One campaign, there's no reason why they can't do it.

If the club's owners are willing to spend money in January, which they no doubt will be, it could give them an advantage over some of their promotion rivals who won't have the same sort of money to spend, and it could see them potentially stake a claim for automatic promotion.

There's still a little while to go until January, and the money given to Parkinson could depend on how the league table is looking then, but if they're well-placed to go up, they could well have funds to strengthen their side.

It's an exciting time to be a Wrexham supporter, and a good January window could see them complete three consecutive promotions.
