FLW's Argyle fan pundit thinks Callum Wright could depart this month
Plymouth Argyle attacking midfielder Callum Wright has been named as the player that seems most likely to depart Home Park this month, due to his lack of game-time so far this season and a likely desire to play regularly at 24-years-old rather than sit on the Greens' bench.
Wright has been at Argyle for two years now, after a January 2023 move from Blackpool, and has been a largely bit-part player under numerous managers over the last few seasons.
The 24-year-old played his part in the Pilgrims' promotion to the Championship in 2022/23 as League One champions, with four goals and four assists in 20 league games, but his minutes have been reduced in the second-tier, particularly so far this term, despite their relatively thin squad depth.
Liverpool-born Wright began his professional career at Leicester City, but did not make an appearance for their senior team and instead enjoyed separate successful loan spells at Cheltenham Town in 2020/21 and 2021/22.
He lasted just four months at Blackpool after a permanent move to the Tangerines in September 2022, and his first six months at Plymouth were then a real success, as he featured consistently while Steven Schumacher's side cruised to the League One title.
Wright has somewhat lost his way in the second-tier though, and he made just eight league starts in 21 appearances last season, while this term has seen him make only five Championship starts so far, with no minutes in any of the club's last four league outings.
As a result of his lack of game-time and need for playing time at 24-years-old, our Argyle fan pundit, Chris, has picked out Wright as the most likely of Miron Muslic's squad to leave the club in the January window.
“Of course Argyle are keen to bring in new players, with severe injuries hampering many of our squad members, as well as the small size of squad," Chris told FLW.
“There are lots of players that are going to be signing up, most likely on permanent deals due to the number of loan players that we already have.
“However, there are also going to be some players that will be looking to move on to get more opportunities of first-team football.
“I think there are a couple of Argyle players in our squad currently that will be considering this. One of which I could think of would be Callum Wright, our attacking midfielder.
“He has recently been playing mostly as a substitute, coming on to the pitch when needed and mainly due to injury.
“However, he has struggled of late in relation to goal-scoring. He has provided significant ability in his passing, and gathered several assists during his time here.
“It is clear to see, however, that he is more interested in getting more regular first-team football.
“I think a loan move away with an option to buy, to either a League One team or even another Championship club, would be the best opportunity for him."
Given the turnover of managers at Home Park last season, it was no surprise to see Wright deployed in numerous different positions to plug gaps when needed, but Argyle strengthened their squad in each of those positions in the summer, which made it seem very likely that Wright was set to leave.
The 24-year-old is an attacking midfielder by trade, but has also played at left-wing and central midfield, yet the Greens signed Swedish youth international number 10 Rami Al-Hajj late on in the summer window, while left-winger Ibrahim Cissoko and central midfielder Darko Gyabi were brought in on respective loans from Toulouse and Leeds United.
That left little place for him in the squad as the deadline edged ever closer, and transfer journalist Alan Nixon reported in the last month of the window that League One outfit Lincoln City were preparing to make a move for his services to bolster their own midfield depth.
That move, however, did not materialise, as Argyle were clearly unsure of getting Al-Hajj's deal over the line, but the Odense playmaker did eventually join on deadline day, which has since left Wright at a dead end and mostly out-of-favour under both Wayne Rooney and interim boss Kevin Nancekivell.
With that said, it certainly does seem like a possibility that he could depart Home Park on loan in the coming weeks, as Argyle have also recently added Ghanaian attacking midfielder Michael Baidoo to their squad for a reported club-record fee, and new boss Miron Muslic will probably want to trim his squad to his liking ahead of a vital second-half of the season.
