Plymouth Argyle are currently searching for a replacement for Wayne Rooney
Plymouth Argyle owner and chairman Simon Hallett has provided an update on the club’s pursuit of a new manager.
The Pilgrims are searching for a replacement for Wayne Rooney, who was dismissed at the end of December following a poor run of form.
The club will be hoping to bring in a head coach that can turn around the team’s position in the Championship table, with relegation to League One now a real threat.
It has previously been reported by Plymouth Live that former manager Steven Schumacher is among the seven candidates that have been discussed since Rooney's departure.
Hallett has written a statement to supporters to discuss the club’s position for the start of the new year, which included an update on the manager search.
He has revealed the criteria that Plymouth are using in their search to find the right person for the job.
“We also hope to be able to announce a new Head Coach in the very near future,” wrote Hallett, via the club’s official website.
“We have moved quickly to identify Head Coaches with a track record of playing the kind of football we want to see at Home Park and have a track record of improving the teams they inherit.
“There are many factors other than his own abilities that contribute to results achieved under a particular head coach.”
Plymouth are currently bottom of the Championship table, with just 20 points from their opening 25 fixtures.
The Pilgrims are three points adrift of safety, and have played a game more than 21st place Portsmouth.
The club are currently on a 10 game run without a win, with their last victory coming on 5 November against Pompey.
Next up for Plymouth is an FA Cup third round clash against Brentford on 11 January in a 3pm kick-off.
Plymouth don’t have the same level of resources as most Championship clubs, so will be punching above their weight to stay in the division another year.
Given their league position, the next manager will have a lot of work on their hands to turn things around this season.
Bringing back Schumacher would be a real coup for the club, although it remains to be seen whether he would welcome coming back to his old team.
While things didn’t work out for him at Stoke, his tenure at Home Park previously went very well, and he could hit the ground running quite quickly if he returned given he still knows many of the players.
