The former Pompey man believes the current number nine can handle the jump up in division

Former Portsmouth striker Teddy Sheringham believes that Colby Bishop will be able to adjust to Championship football after his performances in League One helped John Mousinho's side to promotion.

Bishop earned a reputation as being one of the third tier's most lethal finishers at both Fratton Park and previously throughout his time at Accrington Stanley, under the management of John Coleman.

Pompey were viewed as a big fish in League One through their stature compared to most clubs, and whilst that rings true once again in the Championship, having only been in the Premier League 14 years ago prior to slipping through the English football pyramid, many will view consolidation as a success for John Mousinho and his players.

Mousinho has gained plenty of admirers after such an extraordinary record so far in what is his first taste of management, with many of the players also becoming fans favourites, as well as being recognised for their achievements by outsiders.

Therefore, it's no surprise that Bishop has been backed ahead of the new season by a former England great.

Sheringham was a prolific goalscorer throughout his entire professional career, most notably for the likes of Tottenham, Manchester United and England.

The 58-year-old spent one season with the South Coast outfit between 2003 and 2004, where he netted 10 times in 38 competitive appearances throughout Portsmouth's first-ever season in the Premier League.

However, fast-forward to the present, and Sheringham has backed the club's current number nine to have a strong season in Pompey's first season at this level for 12 years.

Speaking exclusively to FLW, via Crypto Sports Betting, he said: "I like the manager (Mousinho) a lot and he has done a great job. So the way he plays and the players he has in his side, Bishop can absolutely make the step up."

"He knows where the goal is and will be given chances to score as he was last season," the former England international added.

Lack of Colby Bishop transfer talk will please Portsmouth boss John Mousinho

After gaining promotion in such a fashion - accumulating 97 points to win the title - Portsmouth will be pleased that none of their star performers from last season have been linked with moves elsewhere, which aids Mousinho's pre-season preparations.

Both he and fellow striker Kusini Yengi are a similar mould of centre-forward, which proves the boss' meticulous planning when it comes to a system which creates an array of chances per 90 minutes, with Pompey scoring 78 times in League One last term.

The likelihood is that it would take a phenomenal effort to replicate such numbers in a consolidatory season, but if Bishop was to mark his maiden season in the Championship with a tally of between 10 and 15 goals, it represents a successful campaign for both club and player, and would further increase his valuation with his contract set to expire in 2026 at present.
