Ange Postecoglou defended his decision to make changes to his Spurs team in their narrow Carabao Cup win over Championship Coventry City.

Tottenham trailed 1-0 until the 88th minute when Djed Spence equalised, before Brennan Johnson grabbed a late winner to send his side through.

Postecoglou opted to make eight changes to the team which lost to Arsenal on Sunday and despite the far from comfortable victory, the Spurs boss defended his choices.

“What I’ve always tried to do is the right thing and the best thing for us in terms of what we’re trying to achieve,” he said.

“There’s no guarantees with anything you do in football but what I’ve always done is backed my decisions in critical times to always do what I feel is best and if it doesn’t work out then I can live with that but I’m certainly not going to jeopardise what we’re trying to build here by doing something that’s going to make me look like I’m in a safer position.

“We were always going to play these guys because we have Europe starting next week. The last thing I want to do is throw guys in out of necessity.

“We need to get game time and tonight some key players for us got some good minutes that mean that when we do have to make changes moving forward, they’ve already played and they’re ready to go.”

The win over Coventry was Spurs’ second in five games in all competitions this season but Postecoglou dismissed the suggestion that it could kick-start their campaign.

He said: “I don’t think there’s quick fixes or easy turnarounds. I thought tonight we showed a lot of what we did last year – a lot of character and spirit to win games of football and we hung in games, got a lot of late winners.

“I’ve felt the first four games the performances were there and we were probably lacking that a little bit so the fact we did it tonight in the manner we did it, hopefully shows the lads that if we can perform at the levels we have been in the league and add that little bit of relentlessness and drive to win games it will certainly help us.”
