Ange Postecoglou is uncertain of the severity of Pape Matar Sarr’s injury suffered in the 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa but hopes it is nothing serious.

Spurs were dealt their 21st Premier League defeat of the season as goals from Ezri Konsa and Boubacar Kamara boosted Villa’s Champions League qualification hopes.

And Spurs were handed another injury concern during the game with Sarr forced off with a back problem.

Speaking about the injury concern, Postecoglou said: “Pape just felt something in his back.

“We took him off as a bit of a precaution. I don’t think it’s anything too significant speaking to him afterwards, he just felt something in his back.”

Postecoglou also confirmed Mikey Moore was taken off due to fatigue: “I think Mikey was okay. It’s just fatigue as much as anything else, he hasn’t played that sort of amount of minutes before.”

The Tottenham boss opted to rest several key players ahead of the Europa League final against Manchester United on Wednesday.

Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie were left out of the squad completely, while Pedro Porro was an unused substitute.

Asked about resting so many players, Postecoglou replied: “Yeah, but they’re available.

“They’re available. For us, there’s no point bringing them here if they weren’t going to play today. They stayed at home, did a really good, strong session and come Wednesday, knock on wood they are all available and that’s the most important thing.

“That was the primary thing because when those guys play, that back four with Vicario in goal, our chances of success significantly improve.

“I don’t know how else to say it. They’re available. If something happened to them today then they wouldn’t be available and I just don’t think that would be the smart course for us to take.”

Sarr’s absence from the Europa League final would come as another huge blow for Tottenham, who are already without James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Bergvall for the game.

Postecoglou had been hopeful that the injuries suffered by Kulusevski and Maddison were not serious before they turned out to be worse than first feared.
