Potential obstacle to Fleetwood, Charlton deal revealed

Wages may prove an obstacle in Fleetwood Town’s pursuit of Charlton Athletic striker Jayden Stockley, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

Stockley has fallen out of favour at the League One club and reports earlier this month indicated he’s likely to move on this month amid interest from multiple clubs.

Fleetwood are said to be one of those in the chase (The Sun on Sunday, 15/01:p57) but it seems the price of a potential deal could prove problematic for them.

Nixon has revealed that Stockley’s wages are likely to be too high for the Fishermen to land the Addicks frontman.

However, he added that they are in the market for a striker and potentially even two in the winter window.

Stockley found the net 21 times last term, in his first permanent season with Charlton, but has managed just two goals in 26 games in 2022/23.

The physical forward did not suit the style of play that Ben Garner implemented in the summer and has fallen behind Miles Leaburn in the pecking order under new boss Dean Holden.

The free agent signing of Macauley Bonne appears to have freed the 29-year-old up to move on.

The Verdict

Stockley appears on course to leave The Valley this month but it seems Fleetwood may not be the destination even though they’re keen to add more firepower.

The physical striker has proven he can score plenty of goals at League One level and found the net 21 times only last season so you can understand why his wage demands might be fairly high for the division.

He’s fallen out of favour at Charlton and a departure this month does appear the best thing for all parties involved.

It would likely free up some cash for Holden to continue to strengthen as well.
