Premier League clubs have approved changes to rules over commercial sponsorships.

Friday's vote of the 20 member clubs saw 16 back a proposal to amend Associated Party Transaction (APT) regulations amid Manchester City's ongoing case.

The defending champions scrutinised the top flight's gatekeeping restrictions as part of their battle against charges for alleged Profit and Sustainability breaches.

An independent panel found that the Premier League's mechanisms were considered "unlawful" following a legal challenge by City.

"The purpose of the APT rules is to ensure clubs are not able to benefit from commercial deals or reductions in costs that are not at Fair Market Value (FMV) by virtue of relationships with Associated Parties," confirmed a PL statement.

"These rules were introduced to provide a robust mechanism to safeguard the financial stability, integrity and competitive balance of the league."

City and Aston Villa were among the four clubs who voted against the new measures.
