Eddie Howe and his players facing Southampton away on Saturday afternoon, with a 3pm kick-off.

As a Newcastle United fan though, have a look at this weekend’s other Premier League fixtures and have a think about what you’d like to happen and what is likely in terms of results.

Four Premier League fixtures tonight, then four (incl Newcastle v Wolves) on Wednesday night, then the final two on Thursday night.

Bournemouth v Forest (3pm)

Brighton v Everton (3pm)

Liverpool v Ipswich (3pm)

Southampton v Newcastle United (3pm)

Wolves v Arsenal (3pm)

Man City v Chelsea (5.30pm)

Sunday 26 January

Palace v Brentford (2pm)

Spurs v Leicester (2pm)

Villa v West Ham (4.30pm)

Fulham v Man U (7pm)

This is how the table looks on Saturday morning (25 January 2025) before this round of Premier League fixtures are played:

My Conclusions

Saturday 25 January

Bournemouth v Forest – I think this is the most fascinating of all the other matches. Nobody could have predicted at this stage of the season, this fixture’s outcome having a possibility of Forest going second, or Bournemouth going fifth, depending how other results go. Any result possible but I reckon a draw most likely, which would probably suit Newcastle best.

Brighton v Everton – After no wins in eight PL matches, Brighton winning their last two away at Ipswich and Man U. Up against an Everton side who had won one in 12 before winning 3-2 against Spurs, despite doing their best to throw away a 3-0 lead. Ipswich, Spurs and Man U have been so terrible recently, difficult to tell whether these results suggest Brighton and/or Everton are able to now go on a run of positive results. I suppose you have to favour Brighton, even though their overall form hasn’t been great, though no surprise if Everton maybe manage a draw.

Liverpool v Ipswich – After a 4-0 home hammering by Newcastle, Ipswich then lost only 1-0 at Arsenal, before beating Chelsea 2-0 and drawing 2-2 at Fulham. However, that better form followed by home defeats to Brighton (0-2) and Man City (o-6). Difficult to see anything but a home win but Liverpool had won only three of their last seven PL matches, before a fortunate late win due to two goals in added time at Brentford last weekend. If Ipswich could find a goal from somewhere, maybe some room for hope, however, if the scousers score first this could be a heavy defeat for Ipswich.

Southampton v Newcastle United Hopefully back on track and make it 10 wins from the last 11 NUFC games.

Wolves v Arsenal – Wolves picked up seven points under their new manager against Leicester, Man U and Spurs. However, when playing better teams, they have now lost the next three PL matches to Forest, Newcastle and Chelsea, conceding nine goals and scoring only one. They are up against an Arsenal side who in domestic competitions have, in their last five games, lost two, drawn two and won only one, that was 2-1 against a poor Spurs side who actually took the lead. Wolves have some talented players but if they go behind, they look very fragile and capable of conceding plenty. If Wolves can get the first goal here, I think very decent chance that Arsenal will drop points.

Man City v Chelsea – After five PL matches without a win, Chelsea at last managed a 3-1 home victory over Wolves, that match a 1-1 draw at the break. Meanwhile, Man City had won only one of nine PL games before picking up ten points from a possible 12. However, when you consider the three Man City wins were against Leicester, West Ham and Ipswich, that gives some perspective. Especially when the other game was a 2-2 draw at Brentford when Man City threw away a 2-0 lead. Speaking of which, Man City lost 4-2 to PSG in midweek having led 2-0. Any outcome possible here but a draw the best result probably from a Newcastle point of view, which could well be how this turns out.

Sunday 26 January

Palace v Brentford – Brentford one point ahead of Palace but two teams apparently heading in different directions. Palace now only one defeat in eleven PL matches and three wins in last four, having had a terrible start to the season. Whilst Brentford have only defeated Southampton in their last seven PL matches and having had an incredible home record of seven wins and a draw in their first eight at the Gtech, they have now picked up just one point from their last four home games. You have to fancy Palace as the most likely winners, although Brentford capable of getting something potentially, having in their last two games fought back to draw 2-2 with Man City and were goalless against Liverpool until added time.

Spurs v Leicester – Leicester have lost their seven PL matches, whilst Spurs have won one of their last ten, losing seven and drawing two, the only win against Southampton. There is talk of Ange Postecoglou being vulnerable if losing this one and you can see why. You might think Spurs should surely take advantage of Leicester’s poor form BUT then when you look at the results for Tottenham, what confidence can you have in them? Another match where maybe if Spurs score first they could win by a few, but by the same token, they are so feeble so often these days, a goal for Leicester and it would be very interesting!

Villa v West Ham – Potter worked a little bit of new manager bounce magic with a 3-2 home win, though Fulham gifted two shockers. Back to reality last time with Palace winning 2-0 at the Hammers. Villa finding some form in the PL after a 3-0 hammering at Newcastle, two wins and two draws. However, they looked poor when losing to Monaco in midweek and in the FA Cup, needed two goals in the last 15 minutes to come back and beat… West Ham. You would have to fancy Villa but hopefully the Hammers on one of their going days and maybe grab a draw to help Newcastle out.

Fulham v Man U – Only one defeat in their last ten PL games for Fulham, that defeat at West Ham. Though that run included six draws. They face a poor Man U side with six defeats and just two wins in their last nine PL matches. Those two very fluky victories coming in the last few minutes when trailing Man City, then the same against rock bottom Southampton, trailing 1-0 until the 82nd minute and the Saints should have had the game won by that point. I suppose in Man U’s favour you could say they didn’t give up, but in reality, Southampton’s frailty all too apparent. A big surprise if Man U win this, but with all those draws, maybe the visitors can fluke a point.
