Eddie Howe and his players facing Manchester United on Monday night with an 8pm kick-off.

As a Newcastle United fan though, have a look at this weekend’s other Premier League fixtures and have a think about what you’d like to happen and what is likely in terms of results.

Six Premier League fixtures today, then three on Monday, the final one on Wednesday.

Sunday 29 December

Leicester v Man City (2.30pm)

Palace v Southampton (3pm)

Everton v Forest (3pm)

Fulham v Bournemouth (3pm)

Tottenham v Wolves (3pm)

West Ham v Liverpool (5.15pm)

Monday 30 December

Villa v Brighton (7.45)

Ipswich v Chelsea (7.45pm)

Man U v Newcastle United (8pm)

Wednesday 1 January

Brentford v Arsenal (5.30pm)

This is how the table looks on Sunday morning (29 December 2024) before this round of Premier League fixtures are played:

My Conclusions

Newcastle United fans are now enjoying looking up the table once again.

Getting to a cup semi-final and some generally much better form in recent games, means that a win over Man U on Monday would see NUFC cement their place in the top five. Plus of course, hopefully close further on the four teams currently above.

Of course, things still unbelievably tight the other way, with those between sixth and tenth only three points or less behind Eddie Howe and his team.

Sunday 29 December

Leicester v Man City kicks things off and and quite incredible what is happening to Pep Guardiola and his players. You would have thought not long ago at all, simply a case of Man City turning up. However, their last 13 matches in all competitions have seen nine defeats and just the one win. You look at Everton having gone to the Etihad and getting a 1-1 draw last time out, indeed could have won it late on.

Man City have conceded 28 goals in these last 13 matches and only kept one clean sheet, that sole victory over Forest. Difficult to see how Leicester will fail to score and in only three of their last 13 matches have Man City scored more than one goal. We keep expecting them to bounce back to form but…13 games is no blip. I have to say I am thinking Leicester will likely get something, which will see Man City fall further away.

Palace v Southampton is one where you would tend to favour Palace BUT the reality is that whilst they have lost only one of their last seven PL matches, they have won just two of the seven, three all season. The Saints have won only one PL game so you wouldn’t bet on them, this is a game where a draw would be no surprise.

Everton v Forest could well be another draw, Sean Dyche boring yet another opposition to death. Only three wins all season for Everton but no PL team has drawn more than the eight the scousers have managed. Forest are doing well but may only get a point here.

Fulham v Bournemouth sees two teams doing better than most expected them to do. Only one point separates them and no surprise if that is still the case after this match. It is no fluke they are sixth and eighth respectively and a draw in this match would easily be best for Newcastle United.

Tottenham v Wolves is an interesting one, Spurs have lost four of their last five PL matches and conceded 12 goals in the four defeats. The exception was a 5-0 win at rock bottom Southampton. Tottenham were repeatedly called inconsistent earlier on this season but now have found some consistency, as in consistently poor. With a defensive crisis and up against a Wolves side on a new manager bounce, two wins with five goals scored and none conceded, you have to fancy Wolves to get something. I think we all believed that Wolves had better players than their results were showing, whilst now Tottenham look basically a total mess, despite a lot of money spent on this team.

West Ham v Liverpool will be seen by most as a comfortable away win. However, the Hammers do have some quality players who on occasion do perform. West Ham have also found a little bit of form and are unbeaten in four PL games. Draws against Bournemouth and Brighton, plus wins over Wolves and Southampton. If they can defend well against Liverpool, maybe West Ham can grab a draw.

Monday 30 December

Villa v Brighton should be a good watch but predicting the result is another matter. Guessing a draw in this is the best for NUFC. Brighton have won none of their last six PL games, whilst Villa have won only four of their last thirteen.

Ipswich v Chelsea is an away banker for most, however, I think Chelsea have carried so much luck this season. That luck deserting them the last two matches in a goalless draw at Everton and shock 2-1 late on defeat at home to Fulham. Newcastle fans will of course be backing Ipswich and they played decent in their 1-0 defeat at Arsenal after having been lucky to lose ‘only’ by four to Newcastle. Maybe a realistic chance that Ipswich can get a point if defending as they did against Arsenal.

Wednesday 1 January

Brentford v Arsenal should be a good contest. Brentford lost their unbeaten home record when losing to Forest but then got a deserved point at Brighton on Friday. Arsenal will have to play well to win and without Saka they looked to lack a cutting edge against Ipswich. The Bees could well sting Mikel Arteta and see Arsenal get a draw at best in this one.
