Manchester City travel to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night in a crucial clash for both European heavyweights.
The teams have each performed below their usual standards in Europe and are at risk of early elimination.
PSG sit one place outside of the round of 16 playoff places after collecting seven points from six games.
Luis Enrique has some injury concerns to contend with ahead of their battle with Man City. Key players Ousmane Dembele, Marquinhos and Achraf Hakimi were all missing from the squad at the weekend and will be assessed. Marquee signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia isn’t available because he is not currently in the European squad.
Only a solitary point separates PSG and City ahead of tonight’s clash with the latter having failed to win their last three European games.
Nathan Ake wasn’t included in the squad that heavily beat Ipswich at the weekend and isn’t likely to feature tonight. John Stones, Oscar Bobb and Rodri are long-term absentees.
Earlier this week, Manchester City announced the signings of two promising young centre-backs. Abdukodir Khusanov moved from Lens in a £33.8 million package and is set to become the first Uzbekistan international to play in the Premier League. Brazilian central defender Vitor Reis’ move from Palmeiras was confirmed on Tuesday for a fee just shy of £30 million.
However, both defenders are unavailable to play tonight as they aren’t registered in the Champions League squad.
Form
PSG: DWWWW
Luis Enrique’s team are unbeaten in 10 matches with their last loss coming against Bayern Munich in Europe.
They are nine points clear at the summit of Ligue 1 and are yet to taste defeat in 18 outings.
The serial winners earned their first piece of silverware of the season at the start of the calendar year. Ousmane Dembele netted in stoppage time to beat Monaco to The Trophée des Champions.
However, in the Champions League, the French outfit haven’t been as dominant and as it stands they will be knocked out of the competition.
PSG have already lost to Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Bayern and were also disappointingly held at home by PSV Eindhoven.
Manchester City: WWWDW
In recent weeks, normal business has resumed for City after a turbulent period.
Pep Guardiola’s side have won four out of their last five games – including putting eight past Salford and six past Ipswich on the weekend.
However, defeats to Sporting and Juventus and a collapse against Feyenoord to draw 3-3 leaves them with work to do in Europe.
If the Manchester-based club lose to PSG, their chances of reaching the knockout stages will be precarious.
Last Meeting: Manchester City 2-1 PSG, Champions League, 24th November 2021
Just the season before, City had knocked out the Parisians to advance into the Champions League final where they eventually lost to Chelsea.
The French side had exacted some revenge on Pep Guardiola and his players by beating them 2-0 in the reverse fixture.
Proceedings looked to be heading in a similar direction after Kylian Mbappe gave them the lead just after half-time.
A neat interchange from the devastating front three of Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi saw the latter find space inside the box.
The Argentine’s attempted pass took a flick off Kyle Walker which directed it into the path of the Frenchman. Mbappe composed himself before drilling a finish through Ederson’s legs.
Raheem Sterling restored parity just over ten minutes later, but the acclaim was deservedly directed at Rodri.
The current Ballon d’Or winner floated a defence-splitting pass into Walker who cushioned a cross into the middle. Sterling was on hand to poke into the corner.
The host’s comeback was completed with a quarter of an hour to go. Bernardo Silva teed up Gabriel Jesus who slotted in the winner with a first-time finish.
