As they did with Feyenoord, Voetbal International analysed the PSV ranks as the Eindhoven club crashed out of the Champions League last night. Losing 9-3 on aggregate, the historic punishment from Arsenal in the first leg left its mark on PSV’s final report in the Champions League.
Several players saw their average plummet considerably due to last week’s dramatic performance although the two best-rated players did not play in the 7-1 home defeat.
Malik Tillman (6.83) and Mauro Júnior (6.56) were both absent from the first leg against Arsenal due to injuries and partly because of that they ultimately scored the best of all PSV players who were assessed in at least half of the number of Champions League matches. Mauro was mainly a constant factor with only sufficient grades and no outliers. Tillman did not play well away at Juventus (5) and Stade Brest (5.5), but was the big star against Girona (8.5) and Shakhtar Donetsk (8).
There were more standouts in certain matches. Joey Veerman, for example, received an 8 for his performance against Sporting. The Volendammer was exposed during the first duel with Juventus (4), but with a 6.44 he is ultimately number three in the ranking. Behind him are Ryan Flamingo, Noa Lang and Luuk de Jong. Flamingo received a 3 against Arsenal, but in the return against Juve he starred with an 8.5.
Lang and De Jong were also of great value to PSV in several matches, resulting in some fine figures. Ivan Perisic proved himself to be a very valuable asset after the winter break with his experience, but the 36-year-old Croatian played too few matches (four) to claim the top position in the rankings with an average of 7.0. The same applies to Ricardo Pepi, who scored against Shakhtar and Liverpool. The American striker only received two figures (a 7) due to short substitutions and injuries.
Of all the main players, Jerdy Schouten disappointed the most based on his average. The central midfielder missed a number of matches in the main phase due to injuries, but was never convincing with a 6 as the highest score and shared in the malaise last week against Arsenal with a 4. With an average of 5.75, only Richie Ledezma performed worse (5.5). Winter signing Tyrell Malacia was also not convincing with an average of 5 over three matches.
