Jamie Gittens' first-half wonder goal was cancelled out by Jamal Musiala's late header as Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich played out an entertaining 1-1 draw.
Fans were treated to another electrifying edition of Der Klassiker on Saturday evening as two of Germany's biggest clubs squared off at the Westfalenstadion. Jamal Musiala scored an 85th minute equaliser for Bayern after Jamie Gittens had given Borussia Dortmund the lead in the first-half. But ultimately, the two sides had to settle for a 1-1 draw in a game that had it all.
Borussia Dortmund were on the back-foot in the early stages, with Bayern doing most of the attacking. But the BVB defence held firm and got the lead against the run of play. It was Jamie Gittens who once again produced a special moment for his side.
The talented English winger forced his way past Konrad Laimer with an excellent dummy before gliding down the left flank and firing his shot past Manuel Neuer to give Borussia Dortmund the lead. It was an absolutely sublime piece of play from Gittens, who continues to get better and better with each passing week.
The rest of the first-half was a stop-start affair with neither team able to gain a measure of control. Bayern’s hopes took a blow as Harry Kane was forced off due to injury, while Borussia Dortmund had to sub out Waldemar Anton in the first-half.
Bayern started the second-half on the front foot and had a golden chance to make it 1-1. But Thomas Müller failed to beat Gregor Kobel from close range. Moments later, Gittens nearly scored again, only to be denied by a vital last ditch tackle from Laimer.
The end to end action continued as Leroy Sané missed a great opportunity to score, before Marcel Sabitzer was denied by a strong save from Manuel Neuer.
But Bayern finally managed to find a way past Kobel late on, with Jamal Musiala scoring from a free header after getting on the end of Michael Olise's cross.
There was some controversy about the goal as Niklas Süle was struck by the ball on his head moments before it went in. But the referee waved away all BVB protests and the goal was allowed to stand.
Both teams had half chances late in the game but there was to be no winner, as Der Klassiker ended in a 1-1 draw.
It was a valiant performance from Borussia Dortmund, and they can take a lot of heart from the way they went toe to toe with Bayern Munich. But ultimately, they will feel that it is two points dropped rather than a point gained against an out of sorts Bayern side that remains well clear at the top of the Bundesliga standings.
