Tottenham Hotspur continue their pre-season preparations with a friendly against Queen’s Park Rangers on Saturday at 3pm (UK time).

There were plenty of positives to take from Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge of Tottenham, with the Lilywhites playing some exciting football at times and returning to the continental picture with Europa League qualification. However, inconsistency and a relatively poor defensive record resulted in Tottenham missing out on the Champions League place they so greatly craved, while their wait for a trophy continues, Postecoglou knows he must improve in year two.

As for QPR, they looked doomed to relegation to League One for much of last season before an excellent late run saw them climb to 18th, preserving their Championship status with a six-point gap on the bottom three.

Exciting times for both London clubs

Both clubs had plenty to cheer and curse about last season and the beginnings of pre-season will undoubtedly bring new-found hope and belief that they can improve on last season’s campaign.

QPR were mired in a relegation battle for large swathes of the Championship season last time out, but an impressive run of five wins from their last eight league matches — including each of their last three — helped pull the R’s away from danger to finish in 18th, six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham, meanwhile, looked like strong contenders for the title after a blistering start to the campaign saw them go 10 games unbeaten to start the Premier League — including eight victories.

However, injuries to key figures such as James Maddison and Cristian Romero and a sharp dip in form saw Postecoglou’s men fall away from the title picture and, while they recovered to finish a more than respectable fifth, a better end to the campaign would likely have seen the North London outfit pip Aston Villa to the final Champions League spot.

The form of QPR towards the end of the campaign — as well as netting 13 goals across two pre-season friendlies so far — will give the Loftus Road faithful hope that they can avoid another relegation battle while Tottenham will be excited to return to the continental stage.

QPR vs Tottenham latest team news

QPR boss Marti Cifuentes will have thoroughly enjoyed his side’s performance in their most recent friendly victory as Ilias Chair netted a hat-trick in a dominant 11-0 victory over Spanish minnows FC L’Escala last Thursday.

A number of summer signings are likely to be involved in this clash with Spurs, including goalkeeper Paul Nardi, centre-back Liam Morrison and left-back Hevertton, who netted a brace in last week’s rout.

Tottenham manager Postecoglou could bring a number of fringe players into the mix to provide them with opportunities to challenge for the first team, including Alejo Veliz and Djed Spence, who spent last season on loan at Sevilla and Genoa respectively.

Fresh faces could also be given a run out at Loftus Road including 18-year-old Archie Gray, who signed from Leeds earlier this month in a deal worth £40 million which saw defender Joe Rodon move the other way on a permanent basis.
