The switch to a three-man defence has brought about the much talked about balance that Sergio Conceicao has been searching for.

As Quotidiano Sportivo write, Conceiçao got further confirmation from the win over Venezia that the 3-4-3 formation is working, even if he stated after the game that he is not a fan of the system and he chose it more our of necessity than desire.

The numbers speak for themselves: since changing to a three-man back line before the Udinese game earlier in the month, Milan have conceded only one goal and have scored nine. They have won three of them, including resounding victories over Udinese and Inter.

Given that the Rossoneri were previously getting repeatedly exposed in transition and were guilty of making some big errors, adding an extra central defender seems to have helped plugged a gap. Of course a greater sample size is needed, but the signs are good in view of the Coppa Italia final.

Geoffrey Moncada made his thoughts clear on the work of the coach on the training ground, speaking to DAZN before the game yesterday: “We are very happy with Conceiçao, he brought methodology and intensity.”

In the meantime, Milan are ninth place in the league still, with the top four still quite far away. Nonetheless, winning the cup in Rome remains a route into the Europa League, and with this new system – plus a ‘dam’ in front of the defence like Youssouf Fofana – it feels like a possibility.
