Racing Louisville have sacked Kim Björkegren | OneFootball

According to The Athletic, Racing Louisville have parted ways with head coach Kim Björkegren. Multiple sources have confirmed the Swede’s departure with players expected to be informed during a meeting on Friday.

Björkegren was Racing’s second head coach since the team joined the NWSL back in 2021.  The 41-year-old from Linkoping had previously worked in China and Cyprus alongside his home country.

Louisville endured a difficult season in the American top flight, finishing ninth in the league table. The team suffered a disappointing end to their campaign as the play-off qualifications loomed. Winning just one out of their final five league games, the side took just 27 points from the 66 on offer.

Racing Louisville part ways with Kim Björkegren

Björkegren had a raft of top talent within his side. The roster combined seasoned US internationals in the squad including Savannah DeMelo with global names such as Ary Borges and Alex Chidiac.  Despite the wealth of talent, Louisville has finished ninth in all three league campaigns they have contested.

The campaign initially got off to a strong start for Björkegren’s side going unbeaten in their opening three games. Louisville picked up some key wins over the course of the season, taking points from Portland Thorns alongside holding Laura Harvey’s OL Reign to a 2-2 draw. The lack of consistent results was what would ultimately see Louisville miss out on a place in the NWSL Playoffs.

Poor performances on the pitch led to countless changes

Björkegren’s departure is the latest of several changes made by the club throughout the season. Louisville’s facilities, alongside their wealth of experience within the management team, will lead many to expect the side to be challenging for the playoff spots as a minimum.

The club declined to comment when approached by The Athletic regarding their head coach’s future with the team.
