Rangers fans aren’t Koppen well with abysmal Ibrox news

Rangers fans are today seething at the news breaking from Ibrox, convincing most if not all that the club is being run by men unfit for purpose, who have no idea what they are doing and have no plan going forward.

The news broke early on Tuesday that already-hapless Director of Football Recruitment Nils Koppen, responsible for Fabio Silva, Mohamed Diomande, Oscar Cortes and Robin Propper to name just four, was being promoted to ‘Technical Director’ which is now the club’s new name for Sporting Director or Director of Football.

After months, nay, years of Rangers not having a Sporting Director following Ross Wilson’s exit, Rangers have been actively seeking a new replacement to lead over manager Philippe Clement, and having failed abysmally to find one, shifted the goalposts to appoint a Director of Football Recruitment in Nils Koppen, chief scout at PSV.

And now not having found a Sporting Director and having failed to do so, the club has given up and just promoted Nils Koppen to the position instead.

This is pretty shambolic from Rangers, and fans have reacted in almost universal exasperation at the lack of ambition and ideas from a governance unfit for purpose.

Ibrox Noise regulars know that we as a site have been a little softer on the board than many, trying to cut the suits more slack given what they are working with.

But to promote Koppen to Technical Director smacks of utter incompetence, a convenient solution to a drastic problem that only rewards a man who signed Fabio Silva and was ‘happy’ with that.

It’s a pretty meagre, depressing and hollow outcome, Rangers fans expecting someone of credibility to get such a role, and instead the club just promotes (and rewards) mediocrity.

We’re not saying Koppen is garbage, but he’s far from proven himself, and the two windows he’s had have been diabolical, aside (maybe) Cerny and Barron.

And to then plonk him up to Sporting/Technical Director when he’s barely even in the door and certainly hasn’t done anything to deserve the role…

No wonder Rangers fans are livid.
