Rangers manager: latest odds and surprise names revealed

Rangers fans, things are getting tense at Ibrox! As of April 27, 2025, the odds on who will manage the team next have shifted dramatically—so much so that you’d be forgiven for thinking this is another chapter in a long-running soap opera. Betting on who will become Rangers’ next manager is apparently not the most significant thing one can do with gambling, but it must be up there. Especially with these odds being offered by one fairly renowned bookie (the odds are from Bet365), it seems pretty clear that a lot of people think Steven Gerrard is going to return to Ibrox. And that return would very much be in a kind of here-we-go-again fashion. The odds are so short that you’d have to lay down a whole bunch of really easy money to make any kind of reasonable return.
Yet, we haven’t heard the last of Jose Mourinho. The man who coined the term “Special One” when he first arrived in England is in second place in the betting stakes, with an odds-on offer of 20/1 (Paton, 2025). What a wild card! Mourinho has tantalized us with hints about managing in a certain “future” setting that he’s only half-joking about. But if you think about it, of all the places in the world where he could manage next, why not Scotland? Why not Rangers? There are two iconic clubs in Glasgow, and managing either (even if mostly for the sake of restoring a former greatness) would be quite the “challenge” for a manager who has made his name in the Old World as a serial silverware winner.
Some under-the-radar candidates are worth noting. Russell Martin is on the board with 20/1 odds and has also been mentioned in a couple of tabloid stories since last week. He’s currently managing Swansea City with what appears to be a never-ending budget and is playing a style of football that would make Johan Cruyff happy. Next, we have the current interim manager and hometown hero, Barry Ferguson. He’s holding down the fort until season’s end and sits on 20/1 odds to get the job full-time, though that number has been dropping (BettingLounge, 2025). It’s always hard to see why an interim manager wouldn’t be in contention after leading a club through what’s generally considered a stable period, and Ferguson has certainly steered the ship quite well in recent months.
next? It seems we’re witness to an epic showdown, akin to a heavyweight title fight, where legacy battles with ambition and passion duels with practicality. With heavy hitters like Steven Gerrard and Jose Mourinho in the mix, this really is a spectacle to behold. Should the bookies’ favorite prevail, I guess there are “good reasons” that make Gerrard a “stable pick.” But if you’re feeling adventurous in your betting, you can secure much better odds on Mourinho. And if you’re sort of a betting romantic, well, there are reasons for Barry Ferguson and James Tavernier to lead this team.
