Rangers once more displayed their powers of recovery as they came from behind to pull an important win at Rugby Park out of the bag.

After Kilmarnock won a flurry of early corners, they took advantage of those opportunities and Rangers’ set-piece faults as Chris Stokes nodded in for the opener, with Jon McLaughlin again playing a part by being caught in no man’s land.

But midway through the half, Rangers responded as they often have of late when the in-form Fashion Sakala picked out Alfredo Morelos in space in the centre of the area to equalise and send the sides in level at the break.

Six minutes after the break, Michael Beale’s men continued their knack of turning games around and it was one of the star performers under his watch who got it, Ryan Kent making another case for extending his expiring contract by finding the corner on a break.

Shortly after that, the task to turn things around for Derek McInnes’ side became much harder when they were reduced to 10 men as Daniel Armstrong, provider of the opener, was sent off for a silly challenge, moments after Joe Wright went close to an equaliser.

And on 72 minutes, Morelos looked to have wrapped up a comfortable win when he reacted to a deflected cross to head home from close range and make it three, only for the hosts to set up a grandstand finish when Wright pulled one back with five minutes remaining with an emphatic volley.

But Rangers held out to ensure they keep the gap at the top at nine, ahead of facing St Johnstone this weekend in Scottish Cup action.

Celtic’s impressive post-World Cup form continued at Parkhead on Wednesday night as they put in a superb showing to see off a game St Mirren side in style and maintain their nine-point Premiership lead.

Celtic made several changes, most notably with Yuki Kobayashi coming in for a debut in place of the injured Cameron Carter-Vickers, while Giorgos Giakoumakis was also out with a knock amid reports he may have played hist last game for the club.

But St Mirren, the only side to beat the Hoops domestically this season, came close to a surprise early opener, only for Curtis Main to be narrowly denied by the offside trap and within minutes, they were made to pay.

Both Celtic centre-backs came so close to scoring as Carl Starfelt brought a superb save out of the goalkeeper and from the rebound, Kobayashi hit the post but Liel Abada made sure it was third time lucky by thumping his volley home at the third time of asking.

Joe Hart then made a fantastic save of his own to keep Celtic ahead before Kyogo Furuhashi doubled his side’s lead with a glorious lob from a difficult angle for one of his finest finishes for the Scottish champions since arriving 18 months ago.

His second of the night after half-time was much more routine, overcoming an initial offside call after a VAR check to steer Jota’s left wing cross past Trevor Carson before the Buddies were again denied a goal, this time the woodwork coming to Hart’s aid.

James Forrest was denied a goal with his first touch by a questionable VAR call before David Turnbull wrapped things up with a sublime strike from range into the bottom corner. The Scottish Cup and Greenock Morton is next on the agenda for Ange Postecoglou’s side.
