Pressure eases on Philippe Clement after a brilliant start to 2025 at Ibrox
Rangers began 2025 with a bang as they thrashed fierce rivals Celtic in a shockingly one-sided Old Firm derby contest at Ibrox. A rousing 3-0 victory saw the latest pressure ease on manager Philippe Clement, who achieved his first victory in this fixture at the seventh attempt to guide Rangers to only their second Old Firm win in the last 15 meetings despite a defensive injury crisis.
Ianis Hagi gave Rangers an early lead with a low strike from outside the box that nestled neatly in the bottom corner, with Kyogo Furuhashi’s brilliant would-be equaliser ruled out for offside following the interval. Vaclav Cerny twice hit the woodwork on the afternoon for the hosts, who deservedly doubled their lead with a first goal for the club from defender Robin Propper after stand-in captain Nicolas Raskin’s free header from a corner had been cleared off the line.
Brazilian forward Danilo wrapped up an impressive triumph just 70 seconds after coming off the bench with nine minutes to play, handing Brendan Rodgers only his second loss in 21 Old Firm derbies across two spells as Celtic manager. His side still sit 11 points clear at the Scottish Premiership summit, but will be eager to bounce back quickly from such an uncharacteristically bad display that came just 18 days after they beat Rangers on penalties after a thrilling and controversial League Cup final at Hampden Park.
