Former Real Madrid and Manchester United defender Raphaël Varane has announced his retirement from football.

Varane confirmed the news via his social media accounts on Wednesday morning, bringing to an end a 14-year career at the very top of the game.

The 31-year-old is best known for his decade-long service in the Spanish capital, where he won 18 major trophies including four Champions Leagues.

During that time, Varane was widely considered to be won of the best defenders in the game and started every game for France as they won the World Cup in 2018.

I recent years however, Varane has been beset with injuries and left United this summer to join Italian side Como.

The veteran centre-back has played just once for Cesc Fabregas’s men this term and with confirmation of yet another injury has now officially called time on his playing days.
