Manchester United finally broke their 20-month wait for a European away victory as they beat Viktoria Plzen 2-1 in the Europa League this evening.
The victory was United’s third successive win in the competition and ensured they remain unbeaten in the opening six games of a European campaign for the first time since 2013/14.
It was a cold night at the Doosan Arena, with United dominating much of the early possession without much cuteness about them.
Ruben Amorim’s side functioned on the counter-attack using the pace of Amad Diallo and Marcus Rashford on the flanks.
Bruno Fernandes’s speculative long-range strike was their best effort in a relatively uneventful first half.
The hosts shocked United three minutes after the restart when Andre Onana’s misplaced pass gifted Pavel Sulc possession.
He found Matej Vydra, who scored his first goal in six appearances against the Red Devils. The mistake triggered early changes by Amorim as he introduced Rasmus Hojlund.
The Danish injected urgency into United’s attack. He levelled the game in the 62nd minute, reacting quickest to poke home after Jedlicka parried Diallo’s deflected effort.
United pushed for a winner in the closing stages, leaving themselves vulnerable at the back, but they held firm.
With just two minutes of normal time remaining, the Dane coolly slotted home a quick free kick by Bruno Fernandes to seal the win.
The result snapped United’s seven-game winless run on their travels and gave them a significant morale boost with the Manchester derby next on the agenda.
Amorim will hope this spirited comeback can galvanise his team as they strive for more consistency under his management.
