The last two matches have severely exposed Real Madrid’s defensive unit, particularly the right-back position, where Lucas Vazquez is struggling to fill in for the injured Dani Carvajal.

After Raphinha tore him to shreds in the Clasico, last night saw AC Milan ace Rafael Leao run circles around him as the Rossoneri walked away with a big win at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Carvajal’s absence for the remainder of the season was always going to be a concern but Los Blancos expressed confidence in dealing with it with their existing options.

Real Madrid need a new right-back urgently

However, as has become apparent from the last two matches, Vazquez is not going to be an effective solution against the best teams.

As such, MARCA reports that Real Madrid now realise the urgent need to sign a new right-back and are now prepared to move forward with the signing in January instead of the summer window of 2025.

Trying Eder Militao in the position in training has not seemingly convinced those at Valdebebas while the club officials believe that introducing Jesus Fortea in the first-team setup in a situation like this would put undue pressure on the youngster.

Therefore, the reigning champions of Spain and Europe believe that they need to sign a new player in the position in the winter and not go until the end of the season with just Vazquez.

Alexander-Arnold the preferred option

As has already been reported, Liverpool ace Trent Alexander-Arnold remains the preferred option for Real Madrid to strengthen the right-back position.

A move for the England star was being looked at for the summer of 2025 when his contract with Liverpool would run out.

However, given the situation now, a move for the Reds’ homegrown talent for January is being mulled over.

But, a deal appears unlikely midway through the season as Liverpool will be reluctant to let Alexander-Arnold go despite the prospect of him leaving for free in the summer looming large.

So, it remains to be seen how Real Madrid opt to deal with the situation but there now seems to be a sense of urgency at the club to reinforce the right-back slot come January.
