The season is just getting started, and it has already been a rough ride for Real Madrid winger Rodrygo Goes.

Kylian Mbappé’s arrival and status as an undisputed starter made many believe that the youngster has no place in the manager’s dynamics, especially given that the right wing was the only position up for grabs in the final third.

His first performance of the season against Atalanta, moreover, did not give fans much to work with and only amplified the pressure.

Still a Star

With the pressure mounting on him, Rodrygo started Real Madrid’s clash against Mallorca earlier this week on the right wing and delivered a performance that silenced all critics.

In 90 minutes, the young star scored the team’s only goal of the night, had two successful dribbles, and two shots on target. Furthermore, he recorded one key pass and completed 91% of his passes.

As revealed by Rodra (h/t RM4Arab) in a recent report, Real Madrid are calm after the disappointing result against Mallorca but see Rodrygo’s performance as the positive takeaway.

In fact, his display, positioning, and movements on the night reminded many of Karim Benzema’s role at the club, where he virtually served as the link between the midfielders and the attackers.

Just two games into his new role, the Brazilian sensation has a long way to go in adapting to the altered dynamic. If his recent performance is anything to go by, however, the signs are promising.

Looking forward, the youngster will continue as the team’s first-choice right-winger. However, he will be tasked with drifting centrally during the buildup, especially with Dani Carvajal providing the necessary width on the flank.

Thus placed relatively centrally, he can act as the team’s false striker alongside Kylian Mbappe, with Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr. breaking the lines with their skill.
