We’re just under two weeks away from the Champions League final, which takes place on Saturday 1st June as Real Madrid take to the pitch against Borussia Dortmund to find out who will win this year’s edition of Europe’s premier club football competition.
Already there has been much debate over who should start between the sticks for Real Madrid on the night, with both Andriy Lunin and Thibaut Courtois vying for a place in the starting XI.
Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas, who held down the starting spot in goal at the Bernabéu for 12 seasons, gave his take on the debate.
As per Relevo, Casillas said, “Courtois is the number 1, he was the number 1 last year and he is already recovering and I think he will return to top form.”
The veteran stopper had previously expressed that Lunin should be the one to start, as a reward for his loyalty and consistency all season, but now took the chance to clarify his stance.
“I understand how Lunin, who has had a magnificent season, has contributed to Madrid being in the final, but the one who makes decisions is the coach, it is Ancelotti.“
There is seemingly no right answer to this problem which Ancelotti faces ahead of such a massive clash, however, if Real Madrid go out in just over a week and win, people will likely not remember who started between the sticks.
