Xabi Alonso’s appointment as the next Real Madrid coach appears to be imminent, especially after the Spaniard confirmed his exit from Bayer Leverkusen this week.

Upon his arrival, Alonso is expected to make widespread tactical changes to the Real Madrid team so that it can once again compete for titles.

One of the changes could revolve around Jude Bellingham, who has been a subject of criticism due to his recent performances against Celta Vigo and Barcelona.

Real Madrid planning to play Bellingham in midfield

As reported by MARCA, the club’s technical staff are leaning towards using Jude Bellingham in a more traditional midfield role next season.

While he began his Real Madrid career in a more advanced, goal-scoring role that saw him rise to global stardom, there have been occasions when he has been deployed deeper – operating in central areas and even helping shape the back line.

This shift, however, hasn’t come without consequences. Bellingham has looked physically drained, struggling with the extra running required between both boxes. It has also coincided with a dip in his effectiveness and confidence.

Despite this, the club remains convinced that the move will benefit the team tactically.

It appears the club view Bellingham as a player who can combine attacking quality with the work ethic required in midfield. It must be noted that he has experience in central midfield while playing for England.

The report adds that Bellingham is also expected to undergo shoulder surgery this summer, something which is long overdue.

Real Madrid will hope the Englishman can come out stronger and take up a new role in central midfield next season, under the watchful eyes of Xabi Alonso, who himself knows a thing or two about playing in midfield.
