Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong is on Real Madrid’s shortlist as they scour the market for another right-back following a long-term injury to stalwart Dani Carvajal, according to Florian Plettenberg.

Frimpong was sensational for Die Werkself as they won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double last term, contributing to 26 goals.

The 23-year-old right-wing-back hasn’t been as productive this season but has helped the rearguard keep three clean sheets in six Bundesliga outings.

They have also been watertight in the Champions League, recording two shut-outs against Feyenoord and AC Milan.

The rapid Frimpong is a weapon in the final third and will bolster many top European teams looking for a swashbuckling force down the right flank.

Interestingly, the Netherlands international has a €40 million release clause that Madrid can trigger to avoid negotiations with Leverkusen.

Although the player is reportedly not keen on a winter move. Spanish outlets claim Madrid could move for a new right-back in the January transfer window but the Leverkusen star is more open to a summer transfer.

Liverpool will take this news of Madrid targeting Frimpong as a reprieve, considering Los Blancos have been sounding out a free transfer swoop for Trent Alexander-Arnold when his contract expires next summer.

Alexander-Arnold is into the final year of his contract with his boyhood club, and it has been all quiet on the renewal front, leaving fans in suspense. They fear the worst, seeing their treasured gem walking for free.

However, the news that Frimpong is on Real Madrid’s radar will boost Liverpool’s hopes that they can renew his contract and keep him at Anfield for the foreseeable future.

After a below-par 2023/24 campaign, the Englishman has found sparkling form under new Liverpool boss Arne Slot and should be a cornerstone of the post-Jurgen Klopp era.

Liverpool must do everything to tie Alexander-Arnold down to a new deal and prevent him from walking to Madrid for free.
