According to The Athletic, Real Madrid are seriously considering parting ways with David Alaba this summer, primarily due to his high salary and persistent injury troubles.

The Austrian defender, who recently underwent surgery, has become a financial burden in the eyes of the club, especially as his performances have not consistently matched his wage packet.

Alaba is one of three Real Madrid defenders, along with Antonio Rudiger and Ferland Mendy, who have recently gone under the knife.

However, unlike Rudiger, whose performances have been largely reliable, Alaba’s physical condition and age are now genuine causes for concern within the club.

No future at Real Madrid

Even before his latest knee injury, doubts were already being raised over his long-term future at the club.

As a result of these events, it cannot be ruled out that if a suitable offer comes in, Real Madrid will not hesitate to let Alaba go.

His representatives are fully aware of the situation. And if a transfer does not materialise, the club may also push for a significant pay cut, something that could create tension heading into next season.

Real Madrid are already planning ahead

Real Madrid’s interest in reshaping their defensive line has already become evident.

Younger alternatives are being monitored, with Arsenal’s William Saliba catching the eye, although his long-term contract with the Gunners makes a move unlikely.

The club also admire Dean Huijsen of Bournemouth, but his £50 million release clause is proving to be a major roadblock.

Elsewhere, RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba and Ajax’s Jorrel Hato are both viewed as viable long-term options. Lukeba’s €90 million clause is steep, but Madrid’s ambition to future-proof their defence could prompt serious consideration.

Then there is Tah

Interestingly, Jonathan Tah of Bayer Leverkusen, who was previously offered to Real Madrid and even discussed terms with Barcelona, could now emerge as a realistic target, particularly if Xabi Alonso takes over as the next head coach.

Tah, out of contract this summer and unwilling to renew, has worked well under Alonso at Leverkusen and could be tempted to follow him to Spain.

This possible overhaul of the backline is part of a broader strategic transition at the club.

With veterans like Alaba reaching the twilight of their careers and the team continuing to prioritise youth and sustainability, the aim is to avoid bloated salaries and maintain a squad that is both physically robust and tactically versatile.
