Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash against AC Milan, Real Madrid veteran Lucas Vazquez sent a message of solidarity and support to the families affected by the DANA in the Valencian community.

“I would like to send a message of encouragement to all the families affected by the DANA,” said Vazquez.

“To convey that they are not alone. And the pride we feel for the solidarity of the people in these difficult times. We hope that normality will soon return….”

The flash floods have caused severe destruction in the region, leading to many fatalities, injuries and damage to property.

Football matches in the Valencian region were cancelled over the weekend, but Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti felt that all matches across the country should have been called off.

Vazquez, too, shared the same opinion, saying: “They should not have been played. It was a time to be with those affected and think only about that.”

Sharing how difficult it is for players to prepare for games during these circumstances, Vazquez said:

“It’s complicated because football is in the background. The important thing is the people. With these tragedies, it’s difficult to isolate yourself.”

“We are all very sad. There are a lot of people suffering and that affects everyone,” he added, talking about the atmosphere in the dressing room.

“We feel very sad. These have been difficult, turbulent days, where our people have suffered. It’s time for all of us to reflect and think about what has happened. And try to help each other to get out of this.”

Echoing his manager’s thoughts about the players and coaches not having any power to decide to call off matches in times like these, he said:

“The coach is absolutely right. Our opinion is zero, our power is zero. We have to be professionals and do what we’re told to do. That’s what we have to do.”

Sending a message to the organisations responsible, he added: “We are very sad. It’s time to encourage the fans.”

Before signing off, Vazquez spoke about his situation at Real Madrid in the absence of first-choice right-back Dani Carvajal, saying:

“It’s good. The absence of Carva is very important for Madrid, both in terms of football and personally. Now I have to participate more than I was doing. I’ll try to help the team as much as I can and leave my life for it.”
