Barcelona’s 3-2 victory over Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final will be remembered for the attacking brilliance, but it is important not to overlook the defenders who made it possible.

Pau Cubarsi, in particular, put in a masterclass at the back that made a huge difference on the night.

At just 18 years old, Cubarsi showed a level of focus and awareness far beyond his age.

Throughout the game, he stayed switched on, reading every move and reacting quickly to stop Real Madrid’s dangerous attacks. His concentration was flawless for the entire 120 minutes.

Crucial plays against Real Madrid

Cubarsi produced four crucial defensive actions that directly prevented possible goals.

From a lightning-quick interception to deny Vinicius Jr., which even sparked Barça’s opening goal, to shutting down an audacious backheel attempt by Kylian Mbappe in extra time.

He also made sure Brahim Diaz and Mbappe were left frustrated during key moments. His ability to stay calm and act decisively stood out as one of the key reasons Barcelona came out on top.

Statistically, he was brilliant too. Cubarsi made four interceptions, cleared the ball twice, and completed 77 out of 85 passes, reaching a remarkable 91% passing accuracy.

His long passes, which have become a trademark, continued to break through Real Madrid’s press and start dangerous moves for Barça.

A star born at just 18 years old

Cubarsi’s rise through the Barcelona ranks has been nothing short of impressive. After playing just nine matches with Barça Atletic, he earned his promotion to the first team and hasn’t looked back since.

In fact, the final against Real Madrid was already his 50th appearance under coach Hansi Flick. Along the way, Cubarsi also scored his first goal for the senior side and provided four assists.

With such performances, Barcelona can feel very confident that they have a gem in Cubarsi – one who looks set to be a key part of the team’s success for many years to come.
