Real Sociedad star Martín Zubimendi has this weekend provided an insight into his decision to turn down the advances of Premier League giants Liverpool over the summer.
Midfielder Zubimendi, for his part, was of course the subject of something of a surprise bid by way of Anfield earlier this year.
Amid a search for reinforcements in the middle of the park, the brass at Liverpool identified the Spanish international as the ideal profile, before committing to paying the release clause included in his Real Sociedad contract.
In the end, however, no transfer was forthcoming.
This came at the direct request of Zubimendi himself.
Informed of Liverpool’s readiness to bring him to England by his agents, the 25-year-old came to the conclusion that staying put in San Sebastian was best for the time being.
And, as alluded to above, on Saturday, Zubimendi provided an insight into precisely why.
Speaking during an interview with Diario Vasco, as cited by Fabrizio Romano, the gifted deep-lying midfielder explained:
“Liverpool’s bid caught me by surprise, I was on vacation. It was an uncomfortable time for me… but I weighed up the pros and cons, and then concluded that the best option was to stay at Real Sociedad.”
