Paul Scholes doesn’t see his rebellious spirit in the current Manchester United players, something he considers a part of the problem.
During his appearance on The Overlap Fan Debate, the 50-year-old recalled his playing days at Carrington, which naturally included some stints on the sidelines.
The former England international revealed how he always used to push the boundaries when it comes to his rehabilitation program, as he was always eager to make his return to the pitch as fast as possible.
“I think that mentality is a big thing when people get injured,” said the Man Utd icon. “Say someone does their hamstring and the physio says it’s eight weeks, the first thing I wanted to know was what I had done, how long I’d be out, then my mentality switched to ‘Right, I’m going to beat it.
“I could imagine that I was a pain in the a*** for the physios because I was always going to the physio every day saying, ‘What am I doing today? Can I step up to the bike? When am I going outside?”
On the other hand, Scholes doesn’t see this mentality in the current United stars, believing these players needed a bit of rebellious spirit rather than taking the suggested timetable too seriously.
“I don’t see that in many players these days. Once you say twelve weeks, hamstring that’s it, they’re taking twelve weeks and they’re not coming back before that.”
This season, Ruben Amorim’s squad has been ravaged by a flurry of injuries, with several players expected to stay out of action for months. So it remains to be seen if the likes of Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount and Amad Diallo would take Scholes’ advice to heart and try to reduce the time on the treatment table.
Nevertheless, the iconic midfielder also emphasised the importance of listening to the player’s body to avoid relapses as the one suffered by his former teammate Owen Hargreaves who was forced to play by Sir Alex Ferguson.
