Renato Paiva has decided to step down as head coach of Toluca after 12 months with the club. Despite finishing second in the regular Liga MX Apertura season, the team’s surprising early exit in the Liguilla—losing to Club América in the quarterfinals—led to the decision. Los Diablos Rojos were tipped to go far in the playoffs, especially after their 4-0 victory on the final day of the regular season against Las Águilas.

Paiva, who took charge of the team just a year ago, achieved his best-ever win percentage of 52%, winning 23 of 44 matches during his time with Toluca. Heading into the postseason, he guided the side to ten wins from seventeen, losing twice whilst Cruz Azul were the only side to display a better record.

Despite these achievements, Paiva’s time at Toluca ended after the disappointing Liguilla exit, with reports from MARCA indicating that Antonio Mohamed could be his successor.

The team is filled with promise, led by the prolific striker Paulinho, who scored 13 goals in 17 league appearances. An exciting young squad with a natural goalscorer leading the line, this Toluca squad is one that many managers would dream of having as they set their sights on Clausura silverware in the new year.
