A professional Stade Renais player has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after fatally colliding with a pedestrian while riding an e-scooter in Rennes, L’Equipe has revealed. The player, an 18-year-old striker considered one of the most promising prospects of the Rennes youth academy, is reportedly involved in the tragic death of a 51-year-old woman.

On the evening of June 18, the Rennes player was riding an e-scooter, with a 16-year-old Rennes youth product as a passenger behind him, which is illegal, in the Brittany town’s city center. They collided with a pedestrian, on a non-road section. The victim was rushed to the city’s university hospital but she tragically succumbed to her wounds six days later, on June 24.

An investigation for involuntary manslaughter has been opened by Rennes’ prosecutor. On July 3, the Rennes player who was riding the e-scooter was taken into custody. On July 4, the 18-year-old professional football player was prosecuted and referred to a court for the counts of involuntary manslaughter, deliberate and clear violation of an obligation of safety or caution and defect of insurance.

He has been placed under judicial supervision and banned from driving any motorized land vehicle. He will be summoned to court on August 23. L’Equipe add that the Rennes player is facing up to a seven-year prison sentence.
