Bayern Munich have reportedly held fresh talks with Leroy Sane over extending his expiring contract, although he could still be sold when the transfer window opens next month.

The five-year deal Sane signed with Bayern upon joining from Manchester City in 2020 finishes at the end of this season. As of 1 January, the winger could enter a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club with a view to free transfer in the summer.

Sane has so far shown no desire to leave Bayern, revealing in November that he is "comfortable" and the Bundesliga club remains his "focus".

But previous rounds of talks have failed to yield an agreement over a new contract and the latest from Sky Sport Germany is that Bayern are hoping to trade off a potential reduction in Sane's basic salary by improving performance-related bonuses.

That could lead to the player earning less under new terms, with Michael Olise's summer arrival adding to the competition for places. Sane has started just twice in the Bundesliga this season, scoring three goals, with no assists, in 14 appearances across all competitions.

According to Sky in Germany, Bayern director Max Eberl is "fundamentally open" to Sane signing a new contract to stay in Munich. But the two parties have a "long way to go" and no decision on that front is likely before March.

It therefore remains a possibility that Sane is actually sold before then, with Bayern also weighing up the risk of him becoming a free agent in July. The Bavarian behemoth are prepared to "consider top offers" for a sale during the January transfer window.

Sane previously enjoyed a successful spell in England, winning two Premier League titles in four seasons with Manchester City. He was bought from Schalke in 2016 in a deal potentially worth up to £46.5m, and sold on to Bayern for a package valued at £54.8m.
