It’s no secret Borussia Dortmund’s midfield is in dire need of reinforcements. Pascal Groß, and Marcel Sabitzer are aging, while uncertainty regarding the futures of both Emre Can and Julian Brandt have been at the forefront of punditry since the year began. Gio Reyna is likely out the door, and Felix Nmecha has been injury-prone since his arrival. Now, with reports that Dortmund is unlikely to exercise their buy option with Carney Chukwuemeka following his loan, a certain void in the midfield may be opening.
According to Dutch news outlet, De Telegraaf, Borussia Dortmund has approached OH Leuven for the signature of twenty-year-old defensive midfielder, Ezechiel Banzuzi. He’s made twenty-eight appearance for the Belgian Pro League side, scoring twice and assisting five.
Banzuzi has played over 2000 minutes this season for OH Leuven, and has attracted interest from clubs across Europe such as AS Monaco and West Ham United, and it’s become widely anticipated the young talent will leave this summer for a more prominent club to further his career.
Borussia Dortmund’s initial approach was said to be 10-million Euros, a fee that is lower than the Belgian side’s expectations. I expect Dortmund is trying to be proactive in their transfer approach, unlike my opinion from last summer, since a squad rebuild is necessary. If BVB can seal a deal early, then they need not worry about other clubs with deeper pockets. But transfers are rarely so straightforward.
While Ezechiel Banzuzi seems like a promising prospect, Sebastian Kehl will have his work cut out for him if he hopes to secure the Dutchman’s signature before the transfer window opens.
