Everton are expected to revisit their interest in Lyon’s Rayan Cherki during the January transfer window, according to Football Insider. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder has been on the club’s radar for some time, and despite financial constraints, the Toffees could once again explore the possibility of bringing him to Goodison Park.
Senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke stated that Everton are “set to once again look at potential targets who they have previously been linked with.” Cherki fits that profile, having contributed four goals and six assists in 17 Ligue 1 appearances this season.

While Cherki would undoubtedly add flair and creativity to Everton’s attack, securing his signature is far from straightforward. Football Insider notes that “the France Under-21 international would prefer to join a club that is playing Champions League football if he is to leave Lyon.” This alone could push him beyond Everton’s reach, given their current mid-table struggles.

With interest from clubs competing at the highest level in Europe, Everton may find themselves in a difficult position. Even if they were willing to make a significant financial investment, the player’s ambitions could lead him elsewhere.
Another factor working against an Everton move for Cherki is the club’s evolving recruitment strategy. David Moyes is said to be prioritising young British talents, even looking towards the Championship as part of a long-term rebuild. Football Insider suggests that “Moyes is trying to implement a recruitment policy focusing on young, British footballers.”
Given this shift in approach, it remains uncertain whether Everton will genuinely push for Cherki or whether their focus will turn towards more realistic, homegrown targets.
For Everton fans, the idea of signing Rayan Cherki is an exciting one. The Lyon star is a dynamic attacking midfielder with an eye for goal and the technical ability to unlock defences—something the Toffees have lacked in recent seasons. His arrival would bring a level of unpredictability to Everton’s forward play, making him a thrilling addition to the squad.
However, there are reasons to temper expectations. The most obvious hurdle is Cherki’s desire for Champions League football. Everton’s current position in the Premier League, combined with financial limitations, makes this deal difficult to pull off. If bigger clubs come knocking, the Toffees may struggle to compete.
That said, Everton fans can take some optimism from the club’s approach under Moyes. While Cherki may be a long shot, the manager’s commitment to building a young, dynamic squad is encouraging. Targeting emerging British talent from the Championship might not have the same headline appeal, but it could lead to long-term stability.
If Everton can position themselves for European football in the near future, then signings like Cherki may become a reality. Until then, fans may have to settle for more attainable targets.
