Liverpool Face Defensive Crisis as Konaté Eyes PSG Move

Liverpool’s summer rebuild is shaping up to be more difficult than expected. According to Sports Zone, Ibrahima Konaté is “currently more likely to join Paris Saint-Germain this summer than sign a contract extension at Liverpool.” The club are already dealing with uncertainty surrounding Virgil van Dijk, and losing both central defenders in one window would be a disaster.

Konaté’s Future Hangs in the Balance

The 25-year-old French defender has a renewal offer on the table, yet no decision has been made. Sports Zone reports that Konaté “prefers to join Les Parisiens rather than extend with Liverpool,” with PSG eager to strengthen their backline this summer. Given his contract runs until 2026, Liverpool still hold some control, but a reluctance to renew raises concerns over his long-term commitment.

Van Dijk’s Exit Would Be Another Major Blow

Van Dijk’s situation adds to the turmoil. With his contract expiring in 2025 and interest from Saudi club Al-Hilal, the Dutchman’s future remains uncertain. He was seen speaking with PSG’s Nasser Al-Khelaïfi and Luís Campos, sparking further speculation. Could both Liverpool centre-backs end up in Paris?

Liverpool Must Act Fast

Losing both Konaté and Van Dijk in one summer would leave Liverpool scrambling for replacements. While a new contract offer for Konaté is reportedly on the way, the club’s defensive core could be about to undergo a seismic shift. If Liverpool want to remain competitive, they must convince Konaté to stay or start preparing for life without him.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

This is a deeply worrying development. Van Dijk, the club’s defensive leader, could leave just as a new era begins under Arne Slot. But Konaté’s potential exit is arguably more concerning. At 25, he was expected to be the long-term successor, a rock at the back for years to come. If he prefers a PSG move, questions must be asked—why does he want out?

Liverpool must take control of this situation now. If the club allow both defenders to go without securing top replacements, it would be a disastrous transition. The reality is that Liverpool’s defensive depth is already an issue. Joël Matip has gone, Joe Gomez remains injury prone and is expected to leave this Summer, and Jarell Quansah is still developing. The idea of entering the season without Konaté or Van Dijk is unthinkable.

More importantly, this raises concerns over Liverpool’s ambition. If Konaté believes PSG offers him a better future, what does that say about the club’s trajectory? The owners must show they mean business by securing elite replacements—or better yet, persuading Konaté to commit his prime years to Anfield.

Time is running out. Liverpool can’t afford to let another summer slip by without decisive action.
