Carlo Ancelotti won both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid less than a year ago and ven has two trophies with the club this season.

It is thus amazing that his future is still called into question time and time again and that news of his sacking appears in the media at the drop of a hat.

The defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup leaves Ancelotti with his future in the air once more. He did control the bleeding with a win in the Copa del Rey, but he knows he is walking a tightrope as revealed by Alfredo Matilla.

The president’s condition

The report relays that Ancelotti simply has no margin for error heading further into the ongoing season.

His team has not been performing optimally for a while now and he is lucky to have got the required wins to pacify the administration on need.

The UEFA Champions League, however, is the most significant trophy for Los Blancos in the calendar year and that competition once again holds the key to his future.

Real Madrid’s poor start to the league phase has it impossible for them to directly qualify for the next round in the top 8.

However, they do have a chance of making it through with a knockout clash should they finish in the top 24.

If Ancelotti’s team fail to make it through to the Round of 16, either by losing against Salzburg and Brest or in the knockout qualifier, he will face the axe and be replaced by Santiago Solari until the end of the season.

The other domestic competitions also happen to play a critical role in deciding his future.

If he loses in the Spanish Cup, he must lift both La Liga and the UCL to stay for an additional year. Should he lose in Europe, only a domestic double can save him.

These are thus tough days for Ancelotti whose successor has already been identified in Xabi Alonso. The only question, however, is when the managerial change will arrive.
