The Mirror reports that Ajax are making a serious push for Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey, hoping to lure him to Amsterdam on a long-term deal. With his contract winding down, the Dutch giants are seizing the opportunity to negotiate directly with the player’s representatives. However, Brighton’s stance could be pivotal in determining the outcome.
Despite Ajax’s advances, Brighton remain determined to hold onto the Ghana international until at least the end of the season. Previous interest from Sporting CP and Everton signals that competition for Lamptey’s services will be fierce. Manager Fabian Hürzeler, undeterred by the transfer rumours, continues to show faith in the 24-year-old, even deploying him out of position at left-back. As Hürzeler stated: “First of all, it’s very important that T knows how we think about him and I know his perspective on the situation.”

Lamptey, too, appears focused amid the speculation, asserting: “I think the rumours are part of football and I just keep my head down and work hard every day in training, looking out for opportunities. Whenever the manager calls, I perform for the team, that is all.”
Interestingly, Ajax are also monitoring Brighton’s Joel Veltman, a former player, whose contract expires this summer. Brighton do hold a one-year extension option for Veltman, but it is unclear if a similar clause applies to Lamptey. Ajax’s willingness to sign both players in one window adds further intrigue to the transfer narrative.
Hürzeler is clear about his expectations for Lamptey: “Now it’s about focusing on the present and trying to be the best Tariq Lamptey he can be. He was man of the match in the last game and he fully deserved it.” The Brighton boss also emphasised the need for consistency, stating: “Now it’s about getting consistency into his performances, proving himself that he can do this the same time, play that intense the same time, and win this amount of personal duels the same time.”
An expectant football fan would view this report with excitement but also some concern. On one hand, it is encouraging to see a talent like Lamptey catching the eye of a club with Ajax’s pedigree. Ajax’s interest is a testament to his growth and ability. However, for Brighton fans, losing him could weaken the squad, especially with his versatility evident in recent displays at left-back. There is also the risk that Ajax, known for their shrewd business, could swoop in for both Lamptey and Veltman, leaving Brighton with gaps to fill.
The coming months will be crucial. Can Brighton persuade Lamptey to sign a new deal or will Ajax’s charm prove irresistible? Either way, expect more headlines as this transfer saga unfolds.
