Katie Keane made a flying save to keep out a hooked effort by Pau, Meabh Russell prevented a Cris Libran from crossing the line.

When Keane only just beat a forward to the ball she was caught out of her goal by Daniela Agote’s lob but Eve Dossen was on hand to clear.

A rare Irish attack saw Joy Ralph through on goal, only for a late offside flag to deny her the opportunity.

Another last-ditch clearance came in the second half and Pau hit the post but the Irish held out for an impressive point.

Ireland next play on Thursday at 1pm against Germany, who drew 1-1 with the Netherlands in Tuesday’s second game. Melina Krüger was gifted a late goal for the Germans but the Dutch hit back in the first of eight minutes of stoppage time, substitute Hanna Huizenga with a clever finish.

All matches are live on uefa.tv, while Ireland’s games are also broadcast on the RTE News channel and RTE Player.

Wednesday sees the second matches in the other group, with Serbia v England at 1pm CET live on BBC Red Button, BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport Website, followed at 5pm by hosts Lithuania against France – live on uefa.tv.
