Naturally, the attention in yesterday’s match was not on the football in the end.

A medical emergency for Fiorentina midfielder Edoardo Bove caused the match to come to a halt. It was suspended to be played at a later date.

But just before then, Inter though they’d scored.

However, the goal did not stand. Even in a match that lasted barely fifteen minutes and ended with an emotional shock that brought the teams together, there was a bit of refereeing drama.

Why Decision To Disallow Inter Goal Vs Fiorentina Correct

Nerazzurri captain Lautaro Martinez had latched onto a first-time Denzel Dumfries cross.

The Inter captain’s first touch was excellent. As was his toe-poke finish to give Fiorentina keeper David De Gea little chance.

Therefore, Inter assumed that they’d taken the lead.

However, the assistant referee quickly put his flag up.

This was not to indicate an offside by Martinez. But rather, that the ball had gone out of play in the buildup.

Inter players and coaching staff argued with the decisions.

And certain replays did make it appear as though the ball may not have fully crossed the line.

But the clearest and most conclusive replays of the incident showed that the ball was in fact entirely out of play before Dumfries had crossed it.
